What Is the Emotion Code?
Have you ever had an emotional reaction that felt “bigger” than the situation? Or experienced recurring physical pain that doctors couldn’t quite explain? Or maybe you just felt... off, but couldn’t figure out why?
What if the cause wasn’t mental or physical—but emotional?
That’s the premise behind the Emotion Code, a powerful energy healing modality developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson. As a chiropractor, he noticed that many of his patients kept returning with the same symptoms, even after successful adjustments. Curious, he began to explore deeper. What he found transformed his work—and eventually led to this method that’s now being used worldwide.
The Emotion Code is based on the idea that unprocessed emotions can become trapped in the body. These energies can interfere with your physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, and even your ability to move forward in life.
As a Certified Emotion Code, Body Code, and Belief Code Practitioner, I’ve seen firsthand how this simple but profound technique can change lives—including my own.
Let me break it down.
Trapped Emotions: The Hidden Blocks in Your System
When we experience a strong or painful emotion—like shame, grief, heartbreak, fear, or anger—but don’t have the space or capacity to fully feel it, the energy of that emotion can get stuck in the body. Biochemically, we know that emotions are tied to neuropeptides and molecules that create physical sensations in the body.
If that energy isn’t processed, it lingers.
And over time, enough of these trapped emotions can start causing symptoms—like pain, tension, emotional instability, or even chronic patterns in relationships or self-worth.
Dr. Nelson writes in The Emotion Code that these emotions are like “balls of energy” the size of an orange, stuck somewhere in your body, distorting the natural flow of energy. He shares countless examples of people who experienced almost miraculous shifts after releasing even one emotion.
One of my favorite client stories is from a session where we had 15 minutes left, and she mentioned a lingering pain in her shoulder that had been there since a gym injury two months prior. We asked her subconscious if there were any trapped emotions contributing to that pain. The answer was yes. So we used muscle testing to identify and release several trapped emotions.
At the end of the session, she moved her arm and said, “Grethe, it’s gone.” I didn’t quite believe it, but I checked in with her the next day and again two weeks later—and still no pain.
How the Emotion Code Works
The process is simple:
- Identify the issue. Start with a symptom—physical pain, emotional struggle, or anything you’re currently facing.
- Ask the subconscious. Using muscle testing (kinesiology), we ask yes/no questions to uncover whether a trapped emotion is contributing.
- Find the emotion. We use a chart of 60 emotions to quickly narrow down which emotion is trapped, when it was created, and whether we need more information.
- Release the energy. Once the emotion is identified, we release it using intention and magnetic energy—by swiping along the main meridian (just like in acupuncture or Traditional Chinese Medicine).
And that’s it. Your body does the rest.
In sessions, I often see people physically relax as we release trapped energy. Sometimes, they cry. Sometimes, they laugh. But most often, they feel lighter.
The Heart Wall: Emotional Armor
One of the most powerful applications of the Emotion Code is working with something called the Heart Wall.
When you go through emotional pain—grief, rejection, betrayal—your subconscious might try to “protect” your heart by building a wall around it made of trapped emotions. It’s a brilliant short-term survival strategy… but over time, it can block love, connection, passion, purpose, and joy.
