From Freeze to Flow: How Speaking Your Truth Transforms Connection
We’ve all been there—that moment where something inside you tightens. You freeze, shrink, pull back. You’re in a conversation or connection, but your body says no. You smile, nod, and go through the motions, but inside you’re paralyzed.
That’s the freeze response—a lesser-discussed yet common nervous system reaction when we feel overwhelmed, unsafe, or uncertain. It’s not always about physical danger. It can be triggered by subtle emotional cues, like fearing rejection or judgment.
In relationships and group dynamics, especially in environments that invite vulnerability like Tantra workshops or coaching settings, this response can quietly sabotage connection.
Let me share a personal moment where this showed up for me—and how speaking my truth changed everything.
The Story: A Freeze in the Heart of a Tantra Workshop
I was in a Tantra teacher training in Bali, immersed in beautiful practices and teachings. One day, during a workshop, I was paired with another woman. But as soon as the exercise started, I froze.
I couldn’t move. I didn’t know what to do. My body felt locked, and my heart raced. My mind told me: She doesn't want to be paired with you. She's disappointed. She would rather be with someone else.
That story took over.
I could barely look at her. I felt ashamed, paralyzed, and small. I didn’t want to act my way through the workshop, but I also didn’t know how to get out of it. It felt like something I just had to endure.
She took the lead and guided us to one of the workshop stations. I was grateful—because I couldn't initiate anything. But that frozen feeling stayed with me.
Then I made a choice.
I decided to woman up.
I turned to her, gently said her name, and admitted: "I'm sorry, but I have this story in my mind that's paralyzing me, and I want to share it with you because I need some help."
She looked me in the eye and said, "Please share it. I’m open to hearing it."
So I told her everything. I named the story. I admitted that I was afraid she was annoyed, disappointed, that whatever I did would bother her.
She paused. Took a breath. And said:
"You know what? I am a little annoyed—but not with you. I’m just bored with the exercise because I’ve done it before. It has nothing to do with you. I’m actually really happy to be paired with you."
I felt my body exhale. The contraction melted. I moved from fear to relief, from shutdown to connection. And the rest of the workshop? It was beautiful. I could show up authentically, make suggestions, and relate from a grounded, open place.
What Happened in the Nervous System?
This moment is a perfect example of how our nervous system—especially the social engagement system described in Polyvagal Theory—responds to perceived threat.
When we fear rejection, our body might go into:
- Fight (get defensive)
- Flight (withdraw emotionally or physically)
- Freeze (shut down, become quiet, passive, dissociated)
I was in freeze.
But when I spoke my truth, I shifted my state.
- Eye contact and breath helped co-regulate our systems.
- Naming the story created neuroception of safety.
- Her nonjudgmental response activated my ventral vagal pathway—bringing me out of freeze.
In simple terms: naming the fear reduced the fear.
Why Naming the Story Works
When we name a story we’re stuck in, it no longer controls us. According to neuroscience, storytelling and naming emotions light up different areas of the brain—and just the act of putting words to feelings can reduce amygdala activity (our fear center) and increase regulation.
When we speak vulnerably:
- We create space for others to respond from truth rather than assumption.
- We move energy that was stuck in the body.
- We build trust through courageous authenticity.
